Vjosa Wild River National Park was established by the Council of the Ministers on March 13, 2023. The park protects the entire flow of the Vjosa River and four tributaries (Drino, Kardhiq, Bënça, and Shushica) covering 12,727 hectares. This ecosystem contains important biodiversity: over 1,100 animal species, including 15 endangered animals and plant species.
The National Park was established primarily to protect the river, its tributaries, and the ecosystem. The scenic aspects of the valley are the result of undisturbed natural processes and the harmonious settlement of the people who live and work here. Recreation that is based on the enjoyment of the valley, such as hiking, biking, and sightseeing, in combination with education,
is compatible with the objective of protecting the river’s natural life. Sustainable tourism and agriculture are the two main activities that will ensure the future prosperity of communities in the wider Vjosa basin.
In collaboration with local residents and businesses,
the Albanian government, and conservation experts will establish an integrated management plan that protects the natural wonder of the Vjosa and builds a thriving local community.
To maintain harmony between the protected river, the local economy, and how we use the valley, an integrated management plan will be developed. No one knows the area as well as you, the people who live and work here. Your perspective is essential for the success of the Vjosa Wild River National Park. Over the next few months, we will hold workshops to ensure we integrate your needs into the way the park operates. Together, we will make it a long-term success.
